[Blog] How Our Team Looks on Paper
Written by superblueflude on Thursday, 24th Dec 2009 11:30

January will soon here and Roy Keane has admitted that there are a few players he's looking to get in.

I thought this is a great way to hear what Town fans believe are the positions that we need to fill.

A new striker is one, but what sort of player do we want? An out and out striker? A forward who plays slightly behind the frontman? Or someone like Henry who plays out wide then comes in when needed?

Would you possibly look to buy two new forwards? Or keep going with Stead and let Couñago go and play first team elsewhere? Or do we keep John as the target man and get a fast 'behind the defender' type striker?

I'm sure these are the questions Keane asks himself, which makes buying players more difficult. What do you think?

And what about a left-back? Although David Wright is doing a fine job, do we want a left footed player who can support the left winger and cross from the byline without bringing it back onto his stronger foot?

Do we buy a back up to David Wright or maybe buy someone of equal strength so that they can be rotated depending on the opposition, for example Wright for his defensive capabilities and someone similar in style to Ashley Cole (example only!) for his attacking ability?

Then there's our left wing gap, do we bring in a quick attacking winger, left-footed who can skin defenders left, right and centre, sounds good, but who's available?

Forget Gio, I don't think that's ever going to happen again, so being honest what targets do you see out there?

I noticed during some comments about previous post that we seem to be staying with England scouting, why not go abroad? But when we seem to be doing that, suddenly fans start saying 'why so many Irish players' etc. Personally I don't care where they come from, as long as they can help the team progress.

So fellow fans, pretend you're Keane, you have money to spend in January but you also need to get rid of some players, who would you buy and who would you sell?

A pacy striker who runs at defences and can sneak in behind is the priority. Don't think we are going to get Premiership strikers so looking to the lower leagues, Simeon Jackson at Gillingham must be worth a go.

I say in a perfect world we need two strong strikers, who can play together and score goals for us. Two like Bent and Kuqi we had before. And from the Preemiership... but this is not achievable I guess... So I would be happy if we manage to get one good striker during this window - Championship level good. Not like John, or like Hulse. I still have my favourite David Healy in mind but that's also not going to happen...
We may need additions in other areas but the attack is the most important to fix so if I was Keane I would concentrate mainly there.
And to answer the blog's title question - I think our team looks top six on paper (for sure better than most of the teams occupying these places now - Nottingham, Swansea, Leicester, Cardiff) but we are not there yet so we need spot on additions in this January window. Let's hope we will succeed!

We have to get at least one good striker ASAP. We are creating many chances but not putting them away.

Sell/Loan Out:

Priskin
Colin Healy
Thatcher
Trotter (Loan)

Buy In:

Either Chopra or maybe Buszaky from QPR.
Plus a strong central midfielder.
Maybe also a backup defender. Strong, but fringe.

I would most certainly SECURE the services of Liam Resenior on a more PERMANENT basis. What a player!

Loan - Macheda from man utd im sure with keanes links he would be available.

Also still want a centre half i like the look of Coventrys Elliot Ward.

A good left back if needed is Jonathan Grounds from Middlesbrough good young player.

Let Stern John back, loan out priskin for a month to get confidence and see what he does when he comes back.

Sell- Healy, Counago, Martin, maybe even Trotter.

definately and obviously need some attacker hu gets behind defences and scores. however i dont think we can sell pablo he is a fan favourite and offers something completely different to our other strikers h are reletivel similar only he out of our fowards (with the exception of stead OCCASIONALLY) has the bility to hold the ball up, spray passes and bring other attackers into the equation wen attacking. in terms of defence we MUST sign rosenior permanently and perhaps bring in another versatile full bac as back up, IMO dont want to break up defence/midfield by bringing loads of players in as they are doin very, very well.
hopeflly can secure someone like jackson but wish we wud of moved first and got ellington and not that greek side, he would have been quality.

I agree we need a hungry striker from the lower leagues, not the usual Championship or Premiership mercenaries we usually get, for whom Ipswich is a sideways or downwards step on their career journey. With the money we've spent we could have had some of the best lower league talent. Someone like Rickie Lambert at Southampton or Jordan Rhodes back would be just the ticket.

Well, I think the elusive 20+ goals a season striker would be on most people wish list for the new year, but we are still faced with the same old problem of finding one. I would have said getting Ellington on loan would have been worth a punt, as he has been prolific at this level in the past, but that option has passed. I struggle to think of any premiership fringe players worth having that would be allowed/willing to come and our recent attempts to sign players from the lower leagues haven't really gone to plan (Sam Parkin, Gary Roberts...). Perhaps bring someone in from abroad (theoretically better value for money?). Someone with Kuqi's work rate would do nicely. Jason Roberts on loan?

Agree with brendanh, we need someone who has the hunger to want to prove himself and the chance to play with better players. As long as he has good pace and a good touch and can finish in front of goal then take a punt on him....please, no big time Charlies looking for an easy buck, it has to be a player who is eager to make the step up and make a name for himself....Jackson for me!

I believe that we are pretty much covered for Defenders in all honesty, Ben Thatcher last season didn't do anything wrong in my book to not even be considered as a back up player for this season, he's getting on but can still do a job, but David Wright I think is fine at Left Back.

Centre half we are covered for now Delaney is improving game by game at Centre half. I'd like to see Rosenior sign permanant experienced and pacy at a young age so he is worth the buy same with Lee-Barrett he should be given longer terms, but the goalkeeping posistion isn't a problem with 2/3 keepers playing after January.

Upfront and central midfield are concerns for me.
We need someone who either has a bit of pace and knows where the goal is, or an a big target man in the shape of Kuqi all them years ago.
central midfield I think Leadbitter controls the game well someone we have needed badley, but we need a bit of pace in there with him.

Apart from that we have Norris and Civelli to return from injury so they would be like new signings, Civelli hasen't played under Keane yet so that will be interesting.

We need goals though, that's the main weakness so i'd sign a striker as my main January signing maybe two.

I do laugh when people slag off Keane for going for "man u, sunderland or irish" players and now they're crying out for Welbeck or Macheda! Make your mind up guys!!!

Mungo added 12:15 - Dec 26
Would like to see Rosenior sign permanently, but I think he will wait until the end of the season and take it from there, which is fair enough.

Welbeck would be very handy but I doubt Man U would loan him out, at least not to us!

Kevin Phillips would have been good a few years back, he's too old now can only play a full match here and there, otherwise it's coming off the bench to score. Have we not already got someone doing that in Stead? Don't get me wrong he's a quality player but I just think we need someone under about 32 who still has some legs left. Having said that if he did come in I wouldn't complain.
As has been said, Rosenior permanently would be good, we already have a left footed left sided attacking midfielder don't forget, Civelli. Hopefully he'll still be the same player after such an horrific injury when he does return but maybe a left sided player on loan for a month untill he does.
Would like to see Beckford from Leeds signed.

It is a conundrum = given RK's stated target of promotion within 2 years he has essentially 1 and a half seasons to accomplish it. This should dictate who he brings in and while I was never a fan of BFJ he did bring in some very canny signings who did the job at the time. But I fear that had BFJ managed to get through any one of the play-offs to go up there would never have been the money to build a premiership team nor the time. This means RK has to build a team not only capable of gaining promotion but also one that can stay there. On the basis of what we have seen this season it appears to be a very tall order AND we have to recognise that RK has already spent a fair bit of money already, couple that with what Magilton spent and, in reality not only are Town one of the divisions big spenders but for that amount of investment the returns should be visible and Town should already have the basis of a premiership team. Am I alone in not seeing anything like the value we should see for the money spent.
The task ahead then is surely not just to find a striker but to establish the foundations of a team capable of winning the division then staying in the upper echelon. Personally I do not see this being done with journeymen because A/ they will be too costly or B/ getting near their 'sell-by' date.
It is not going to be easy and I feel some well loved 'stars' will be departing to make way (and make affordable) the players who come in. I don't think the journey to the premiership has started yet and where the players are going to come from who will start that journey and see it through is, I believe one of the toughest tests which peronally I am not sure RK is the man to lead us.

no no no no no no no no no!
simeon jackson would be a poor signing! im from rushden and saw a lot of him playing for rushden & diamonds as a youngster, and unless he has undergone a complete transformation at gillingham he would be a very poor signing, not championship quality at all.
would love to see us bring in beckford!!!!!!!
